And from the evil of an envier when he envies.
Envy arises from the covetousness of the soul. It includes thinking that a favor given to another should have been given to oneself, or wishing that the favor be removed from the other. This trait is found in those who do not recognize themselves and who do not form the belief that all good and evil come from the Impartial Allah, as understood through Adhikr. As explained in verses 59:9 and 64:16, no one can become a believer or prosperous without being freed from the covetousness of the soul. See explanation 7:146-147; and 40:56.
The hypocrites who will enter the Fire without trial, and their followers who will be led to Hell after Trial, harbor envy and enmity toward believers who testify Adhikr, which is the Food, Clothing, and Sight of the human soul, as well as the Best Favor from the Lord and a Healing for all mental and bodily diseases. Therefore, the one-in-a-thousand believer should seek refuge with these Surahs, as well as with Adhikr, from envy, jealousy, and all other evils of the Fujjar, with the Lord in whose hand is the control of all living and non-living things. Praying to the Lord for similar favors without wishing harm or loss to others is not considered envy, as explained in verse 4:32. See explanation 5:27-30; 92:6-10; and 94:1-2.
